Stained glass care
Yay! You've purchased some stained glass, now what?
Here are some tips to keep your glass looking great.
Oxidation
All stained glass will oxidize in time, this is completely normal, so no need to panic. Oxidation occurs as air interacts with the solder (60% tin 40% lead). If you are in a humid environment that is not climate controlled oxidation will occur sooner rather than later.
Cleaning
If you notice your glass looking a little dull I recommend using a soft cloth to gently buff the solder lines. Be sure to use a cleaning cloth that is NOT used for dishes or anything else other than cleaning products. The cloth should remove any “white haze” that may show up over time.
All pieces are sealed with wax after they are made to extend the shine and slow the oxidation process. It’s a good idea to reapply some polish from time to time to keep your piece looking shinny and help extend the life of the solder. I recommend Pledge in the aerosol can as it’s a common household product and does a great job bringing solder to a shine. To apply, just spray the pledge on a cloth and rub onto the solder lines. Pledge also does a great job of removing finger prints and dust, bonus! Again, be sure to use a rag that does not get used for dishes or other household uses.
Never use an abrasive sponge or scrub brush as it could damage the glass as well as scratch the patina on black or copper solder lines. Never use windex or any other cleaner which contains ammonia, it will damage the solder and weaken the structural integrity.
Lead
Almost all stained glass is made from solder which contains 60% tin and 40% lead. This is the traditional method of making stained glass. Lead is only harmful if ingested or inhaled. If you handle your piece to clean it just remember to wash your hands after with soap and water.
Hanging
Please do not use a suction cup hook to hang your glass!!! Suction cups are prone to failing and it would be so sad if your piece came crashing down! Instead, hang by a nail or eye hook that is securely attached to your wood trim.
